THE HOUSE – The Frank Applegate Estate
The theme of this year’s Showhouse is “Reinventing Western Classics.” How perfect, because this year’s Showhouse is a residence that’s not only a western classic, it’s a western classic that’s been reinvented several times since being built in the late 1700’s.

807961Still known as the Frank Applegate Estate, it’s an original adobe that was built as an 18th century fortress before being bought for $114 in 1845 by Sergeant Francisco de la Peña, a soldier of the Mexican Army who had fought at the Battle of the Alamo and the first to reinvent the property located at 831 El Caminito.

Enter Frank Applegate. Born in Illinois in 1881 and an artist his entire life, studying and teaching art in the U.S. and in Europe where he met Picasso, Cezanne, and Matisse in the 20’s, he started out as a ceramist before becoming a painter.

A bit of a serial remodeler who regarded homes as “livable sculptures,” Applegate, who had thrown himself into Native and Colonial Hispanic arts and who quickly became a seminal player in developing and establishing the town’s historic conservation movement, soon turned his preservationist’s eye to El Caminito.

Enter gallery owner Gerald Peters and his wife Katie, who purchased the Applegate Estate in the mid-80’s. Cut from the same cloth as Applegate, the couple, who would fill the house with their four children, had already renovated five other adobes together. Yet, like its previous owner, they were determined to retain the history of the estate.

Enter Showhouse Santa Fe. Each local designer takes a room of the Applegate Estate and furnishes it guided by the theme “Reinventing Western Classics” featuring leather, denim, and suede. The big reveal happens on Friday, October 2nd.

Today, this tree-lined compound of six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, presented by Deborah Bodelson and Cary Spier of Santa Fe Properties, exemplifies everything that makes for a classic Western home: adobe, historic, and always more than ready to accommodate the new, the interesting, and the unexpected.

When Santa Fe Style first entered the consciousness of the art and design world in the 1980s, it delighted people with its warmth, livability, and adaptability. The sensual contours of adobe and the earthy appeal of vigas, kiva fireplaces, and expansive portales provided an inviting backdrop for interior designs ranging from antique Victorian to cutting-edge minimalism. Characterized by a reverence for natural materials, skilled craftsmanship, and an ancient aesthetic, the style quickly became emblematic of the region.
